Daniel Radcliffe stars as Harry Potter, an unfortunate boy living with his unpleasant aunt and uncle, and his spoilt fat cousin, who let him sleep in the cupboard under the stairs and treat him with contempt. Much to his surprise, on his birthday a message is brought to him from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry by a giant of man called Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) – it seems Harry's dead parents were actually practitioners of magic, and Harry too is a wizard.
Hagrid helps Harry prepare for school, and soon he is away, catching the Hogwarts Express with the other students of his new school. Harry discovers that it was an evil wizard called Voldemort (Ian Hart) who killed his parents, and who also tried to kill him. He soon meets Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) who will become firm friends with him. However, Harry finds that he has more to deal with than just the challenges of learning to perform acts of magic and play quidditch. The evil Valdemort is back and this time he is going to find Harry Potter in his way.
This is a fine adaptation of the work of JK Rowling. Although much of the detail from the books is missing due to time constraints, the meat of the story is very much there, and fans of the books are unlikely to be disappointed. The three young stars do a workmanlike job of acting as young wizards, and the incredibly strong supporting cast bring a great deal of colour and life to the characters. Hogwarts in particular looks fabulous, and viewers of all ages will find themselves wishing they went to school there.
It's Got: Enough magic to keep everyone happy.
It Needs: To be longer in order to allow more of Hogwarts life to come across – more Quiddich.
