Collateral (2004)

Overall Score: 7 out of 10

It started like any other night.

Starring: Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx

Director: Michael Mann

Running Time: 120 minutes

US MPAA rating: R
UK BBFC rating: 15
Action, Crime, Drama, Thriller

If you have a lot of money, it is wise to invest it in something secure and dependable. This is why it pays to cast Tom Cruise in any big-budget production - for despite his rise to stardom in a film called 'Risky Business', Cruise has shown an unwavering consistency in his career that guarantees he is alway a safe bet when it comes to making a film bankable. Cruise, you see, always plays the same - EXACTLY the same - character. Epitomised by that dazzling grin and slight shortness of stature, Cruise is invariably a brash, self-confident charmer with a mere hint of vulnerability - think can-do salesmanship accompanied by just the tiniest scruple of doubt. Yet if Cruise's performance never really changes, there are occasionally films which exploit this by placing him in unusual positions and bringing out the cracks beneath his cocky all-American surface - films like

It's Got: A cab driver who wishes he was on a tropical island, a ruthless hitman, five jobs, one night, and a disconnected LA that barely notices or cares.

It Needs: An ending at least the equal of all that has preceded.

Alternatives: Training Day, 'Taxi Driver', 'Heat'

Summary: A single LA night compacted into two gripping hours of four big hits and one anticlimactic miss. Overall Score: 7 out of 10

I saw it last night- pretty cheesy, but still entertaining. It's possibly worth renting. Maybe

Not good enough
Worst movie i have ever seen.
Glorified version of a PS 2 game.
Strong characters were not backed by a story line.
There is no story in this movie.
Mr Director knows the perfect formula of selling a movie.
Very very average movie. Could have been so much better.

Awesome movie, even if the ending was li'l bit too long. Cruise's best role to date, not forgetting equally strong Foxx. I just loved the mean LA views. Go see it.

Not good enough. Does not contain enough action as expected from Cruise. Just some pistol shots and that's all. At times it becomes very boring. It's a waste of money and time.

Situ, nhf, but you are an stupid idiot. This is THE movie.Look, you are not to blame yourself for your stupidity,it is not your fault. It is the fault of our society whom can't recognize good, quality art. This is an art movie. Please don't be idiots like Situ, babe(how stupid name),Rayan and the rest of you who can't see the truth...Go kill yourself.

abosolutely Vincent. You people who didn't enjoy this film from the beginning are the reason i'm not proud of this society.
In short this film is absorbing from the beginning, it has a thrilling realism from the thunder of gun shots to the convincing emotion of Jamie Foxx, also the streets of LA were just as I remember from a short trip of mine. Written by an Australian, no more to say.

Absolutely Crap! I thought Tom Cruise would have the intelligence by now to select reasonable scripts. This movie was had a totally unbelievable sequence of events..a normal intelligent human being could not suspend disbelief this much.
Tom Cruise is meant to be a professional contract killer but hires a cab to wait for him while he kills people...yeh thats really professional!
Comment by:- Marc | | 31 October 2004 | ip: logged

Yes hiring a cab is very proffesional indeed. It is low profile and doesent get your hands dirty, gets the driver instead as the film displays. Its not all about action that makes a film great...

Hires a cab? Marc, you are a petty idiot, he quite clearly and obviously takes him hostage... did you actually watch the movie or did you decide to post that crap after seeing the trailer?

One of the best films of the year, Collateral is packed with action and two standout performances by Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise. It's definitely worth checking out...

Damn this is some MASTER piece. Show's frightfully realistic how the existence of our species is just a glimpse in the universe. Illustrating cruise in his role as an confident, indifferent killer is remarkable as it contradicts the other mainrole player foxx's character for what he has his American Dream right in his pocket but cant grab it. Sick philosophical movie with nice scenes and a ****load of peaks, especially when you focus on everything, including music and camera interpertation. (scene were Foxxs playing Max pretending he's Vincent and Felix who doesn't (or does, still wonder…) trust him rules (musica del mexico does it!) It has a good exciting pace to it and doesnt slow down till cruise is dead.
