The Five Obstructions (2003) Sometimes it is only through being constrained that an artist can truly be free. Jørgen Leth's perfection as a director is revealed and reaffirmed by Lars von Trier's five diabolical attempts to introduce flaws to his work, in a film which is thought-provoking, enigmatic, humane and warmly funny. 10/10
Bodysong (2002) A kaleidoscopic succession of images that will have you laughing, gasping, shuddering and gaping, but most of all reflecting on the fundamental questions of human existence - plus a score by Johnny 'Radiohead' Greenwood that sets just the right tone of majesty, drama and awe. 10/10
Nuit et brouillard (1955) A harrowingly economic document of the Holocaust, and a plea for vigilance. Watch it. 10/10
Être et Avoir (2002) A captivating documentary on the influence of a dedicated teacher on the intellectual and emotional development of young children. 9/10
Decasia (2002) Mortality, oblivion and the ravages of time have never looked so hauntingly, beautifully timeless. 9/10
